Pregame: Red Stars at Freedom
Chicago (2-3-4, 10 points) vs. Washington (3-3-3, 12 points) at RFK Stadium
Time: 4:30 p.m. ET
Game followed by Chicago Fire at D.C. United MLS match
Washington had the perfect opportunity to show how much of the gap it had closed in its chase of the WPS-leading LA Sol but all the Freedom left with was an embarrassing loss. So in what is shortly becoming a never ending bag of tricks, Jim Gabarra gets FFC Frankfurt to loan him Virginia native Ali Krieger (the Freedom’s third USWNT allocated player) to shore up the defense that has given up a league-leading 18 goals.
You have to wonder how many more tricks Gabarra has up his sleeve and if this doesn’t work, how does he top this move? And with Lori Lindsey still fighting off the illness that sidelined her last week, are more lineup changes in the works for tomorrow? I wouldn’t be surprised given the fact Gabarra has already changed his formation this year.
Four points separates the second place Freedom from last place Sky Blue FC, so every point is critical. I don’t know if I am going so far as to say this is a must win game for this club because frankly, every game could be argued as a must win, but I do think it is critical for the Freedom to come away with one point.
Given the fact Chicago had gone almost four games between goals before last week’s goal against LA, I think Krieger is just what the defense needs to finally get that elusive clean sheet. Look for Washington to win this matchup 1-0. No more superhuman performances from Caroline Jonsson.
