Who stays, who goes? It’s draft day
So, I held off on this post as long as possible because I wanted to have an actual list to work with before I tried to figure out which of the Freedom’s unprotected players would go first in today’s expansion draft. But in typical WPS fashion, an attention-getting event is being completely underplayed.
Similar to what happened with last year’s International draft, the only thing we will see regarding today’s draft is the list of players selected … two hours after the draft occurs. No live draft tracker, no (presumably) pre-released list of players available, just a recap posted well after the fact.
This approach is a huge mistake. If WPS had been paying attention to the web, the league office would know that this is something the fans are craving info for. For the past two weeks the top terms bringing people to this site have been “WPS expansion draft.” Now, this isn’t the most highly trafficked blog but I imagine that if people are looking here for info they are looking elsewhere as well.
Fortunately for Freedom fans we know who is available, and while it looks like either Lori Lindsey, Alex Singer or Rebecca Moros may be the first Freedom player taken, we can’t make that good of a guess because we have no idea who is available. If there is a gluttony of young defenders available, chances are Lindsey or Moros will be taken first. If the situation is reversed, Singer could be a scarce commodity.
But again thanks to a lack of info the only thing we can do is look at our list and try to determine what may happen, while we wait to hear something at some point. As soon as the results are posted I will put them up here with my take. So enjoy your Tuesday and I will see you later.
[UPDATE #1, 7:05 a.m. EDT] One thing I finally found confirmed – players on 1 year contracts are not eligible to be selected in today’s draft. That completely changes this dynamic as well. Since contract details for players have not been released, it is entirely possible that Lindsey, Singer and/or Moros can become free agents on Sept. 30, making them free to resign with the Freedom and ineligible to be selected today.
If you are looking for some speculation on who might be kept and who might be going, check out Women’s Soccer Weekly’s speculation.
So with developmental players and free agents to be off the table, will that really leave the starters this story suggests the team is looking for?
